Setup and planning
Collect enough greens and browns before building the pile so it reaches roughly one cubic yard. Chop coarse ingredients, mix them rather than creating dense layers, and place the pile where water and turning tools are convenient. A compost thermometer makes temperature trends easier to understand.
Ongoing routine
Monitor the center, turn when heat begins to fall, and restore moisture during mixing. The goal is sustained biological activity, not the highest possible reading. After the active phase, allow time for curing so the material becomes stable before using it around plants.
Common problems to avoid
A pile that never warms may be too small, dry, carbon-heavy, or poorly mixed. A sharp odor usually signals excess moisture or low oxygen. High temperatures do not excuse contaminated feedstock, and home systems should still exclude animal products and chemically treated material.
