How backyard composting works
Composting is managed aerobic decomposition. Microorganisms use carbon for energy and nitrogen to grow, while water supports their activity and pore spaces carry oxygen through the pile. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends adding two to three times as much brown material as green material by volume. That is a useful starting recipe, not a laboratory test.
Dry leaves, small twigs, shredded uncoated cardboard, and untreated wood chips supply carbon and structure. Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, fresh plant trimmings, and modest amounts of grass supply nitrogen and moisture. Mixing different particle sizes creates air pockets. A dense layer of wet grass or food scraps can squeeze those pockets shut and produce odor.
Choose a site and bin you will use in February, too
Put the system on level, well-drained ground within easy reach of the kitchen and a water source. Sun or shade can both work. Access matters more than chasing the warmest corner of the yard. Leave enough room to open the lid, turn the pile, and remove finished compost without trampling a garden bed.
Open piles suit leaves and yard trimmings. Once food scraps enter the system, an enclosed bin is easier to protect from rodents. EPA guidance calls for covering each food addition with four to eight inches of browns. Where rodents are common, use a secure lid and hardware cloth with openings no larger than one quarter inch around vulnerable gaps.

What belongs in a home pile
Good home inputs include vegetable peelings, fruit cores, coffee grounds and paper filters, crushed eggshells, non-glossy shredded paper, dry leaves, and untreated garden material. Chop corn cobs, thick stems, and woody pieces if you want them to disappear faster. Always remove produce stickers, twist ties, rubber bands, plastic windows, tape, and coated labels.
Leave meat, fish, bones, dairy, fats, pet waste, diseased plants, seeded weeds, glossy paper, and herbicide-treated clippings out of an ordinary backyard pile. Commercial programs may accept some of those materials because their equipment and operating rules differ. Follow the receiving program's published list rather than a package that only says "compostable."
Know when compost is finished
Stop adding fresh material when the pile no longer reheats after mixing and recognizable food has disappeared. Let it cure for at least four weeks. Finished compost is dark, loose, and earthy-smelling. A handful should not heat up in a closed bag or carry a sour or ammonia odor.
Sift out sticks, pits, and other slow pieces and return them to the active bin. Use the screened compost as a soil amendment or mulch. EPA suggests mixing two to four inches into the upper six to nine inches of soil for a new bed, or applying a surface layer while keeping it away from plant stems and tree trunks.

What this method does well, and where it struggles
A backyard bin combines yard trimmings and simple kitchen scraps without collection trips or specialized equipment. It also gives the household direct control over the finished compost. The method is less convenient for cooked food, animal products, large households with few dry leaves, and anyone who cannot lift or turn damp material.
If the pile repeatedly runs out of browns, store bags of dry autumn leaves before winter. If space, animals, or mobility make the routine impractical, a community drop-off or curbside program is a valid composting system. The best choice is the one that keeps contamination low and still works after the first burst of enthusiasm.

Rotten or sulfur smell
The pile is probably too wet or short on oxygen. Break up clumps, turn the material, and mix in coarse dry browns.
Ammonia smell
There is more available nitrogen than the pile can use. Add and mix in dry leaves, shredded cardboard, or wood chips.
Scraps remain unchanged
Check moisture, particle size, and green material. A dry or carbon-heavy pile will move slowly even when it looks tidy.
Flies or animals
Remove exposed problem food, clean the rim, bury new scraps, add a thick brown cap, and repair openings in the bin.
