Sheet Composting

Sheet composting builds soil in place from the surface. Plain cardboard may suppress existing plants, while leaves, compost, and other clean organic materials form a broad decomposing layer. The bed needs months to settle, and thick deposits of kitchen scraps invite trouble.

Sheet composting, lasagna gardening, and mulch

Sheet composting layers organic materials across a defined area so they decompose where plants will grow. "Lasagna gardening" is a common name for the same layered approach. A thin layer of leaves used only to protect soil is mulch; a deeper, mixed stack intended to break down and build a bed is sheet composting.

Oregon State University Extension advises starting several months before the bed is needed and notes that fall construction gives the materials winter to soften before spring planting.

Use cardboard selectively and prepare it completely

Mow or flatten the site first. Overlap plain brown corrugated cardboard where existing grass must be suppressed, then soak it until water can pass through. Remove all tape, labels, staples, plastic windows, glossy coatings, and wax. Cardboard is a carbon layer and weed barrier, not a complete bed.

Skip cardboard around established plants with shallow roots or where it would block needed water. Aggressive perennial weeds can grow through or around the edges. Remove their roots rather than assuming a paper layer will solve the problem.

Build mixed layers that can hold air

Add alternating carbon-rich material such as leaves or straw and nitrogen-rich material such as fresh plant trimmings, finished compost, or modest grass clippings. Break up mats and wet dry layers as you build. Finish with leaves, straw, or mature compost so no food or fresh greens remain exposed.

Do not spread a sheet of kitchen scraps across the bed. Food attracts animals and collapses into a wet layer. If small amounts are used, chop, disperse, and bury them within other material. Keep meat, dairy, oil, pet waste, diseased plants, and seeded weeds out.

Let the bed settle before roots depend on it

Keep the sheet moist but not saturated and repair exposed patches with mulch. Over several months, the height falls and the cardboard softens. A bed that still heats, smells sour, or contains distinct wet layers is not ready for direct sowing.

When the upper material is dark and loose, plant into pockets of finished compost and soil. Deep- rooted crops may need the entire layer to be farther along than shallow transplants do. Expect to add a surface mulch as the first year's bed continues settling.

Use sheet composting for beds, not for every scrap

The method covers a broad area, protects soil, and avoids moving a finished pile. It also needs a large volume of clean material at the right time. It does not create uniform baggable compost, and a dense urban garden may not have space to wait.

Trench composting is better for small, buried additions. A backyard bin is better when compost must be moved among several beds. Sheet composting is most convincing when the main goal is to create one planting area from local leaves and yard material.

  1. Define and clear the area

    Flatten growth and remove aggressive perennial weeds, debris, and plastic.

  2. Lay prepared cardboard if needed

    Overlap plain sheets, remove every contaminant, and wet them thoroughly.

  3. Alternate clean materials

    Use varied carbon and nitrogen layers without dense grass or food mats.

  4. Cap and water

    Finish with leaves, straw, or mature compost and moisten the full depth.

  5. Wait and inspect

    Allow several months, then plant only after the bed has settled and smells earthy.

Extend the overlap beyond the bed, remove persistent roots, and add mulch where light reaches gaps.

The layer is still coarse at planting time

Wait longer or transplant into pockets of finished compost and soil without burying roots in active material.

How thick should a sheet compost bed be?

There is no universal depth. Build enough mixed material to meet the bed's goal without creating compressed wet layers, and expect the stack to shrink.

Can I use printed cardboard?

Plain brown corrugated cardboard is the conservative choice. Remove tape, labels, staples, glossy coatings, wax, and plastic before use.

Can I plant immediately after sheet composting?

Usually not. Start months ahead. If the layers are cool and partly broken down, transplants can go into pockets of finished soil and compost.

Does sheet composting kill every weed?

No. It can suppress grass and annual weeds, but aggressive roots, runners, and edge growth may survive. Remove them during site preparation.
