Compost that is not breaking down usually needs a change in moisture, airflow, or ingredients. Before adding anything, open the pile and inspect its interior. A dry surface can hide a wet center, and a cool pile can still be decomposing. Match the remedy to what you find instead of adding more food scraps automatically.

Why does my compost smell bad?

Rotten eggs or a sour smell

A strong sulfurous smell can indicate that a wet, compacted pile lacks oxygen. Turn it to open the material, break up dense clumps, and mix in absorbent browns such as dry leaves or untreated wood shavings. The aim is to restore air spaces throughout the pile, not simply hide the smell beneath a dry surface layer. Turning may briefly release a stronger odor before conditions improve.

A sharp ammonia smell

Ammonia points toward a mix with too much nitrogen relative to carbon. Add carbon-rich material and mix it through. Adding another load of grass clippings or food scraps is the wrong correction for this symptom. Cornell explains the distinction in its compost odor guide. Some earthy odor is normal; the goal is a balanced process, not a completely scentless pile.

How to fix compost that is too wet or too dry

Water occupies the same spaces that air needs to move through compost. When material is saturated, oxygen becomes scarce. At the other extreme, a dry pile limits microbial activity. Cornell’s moisture guidance explains why either extreme can interrupt decomposition.

For a sodden pile, work dry, bulky material into the wet pockets. Cardboard pieces or coarse wood chips can help open the mixture, although wood will take longer to disappear. Check the bottom as well as the top: a pile standing in water needs better drainage, not just another covering.

For dry compost, add water gradually while mixing so it reaches the interior. Stop before water pools. A practical texture target is damp and springy, like a sponge after squeezing. Recheck several places rather than judging one handful. If the center remains dry, repeatedly wetting only the outside will not solve the underlying problem.

Why is my compost not heating up?

Heat is most useful as a clue when you are deliberately making a hot compost batch. A small pile may lose heat faster than it accumulates it. Oregon State Extension recommends adjusting expectations when there is not enough fresh material for a heating batch: a cooler pile can still decompose over a longer period. If your goal is low-effort recycling of garden material, a cold compost pile may already be doing its job. Do not judge that system against the timetable of a carefully built hot pile. Compare the material over time: is its original structure becoming less recognizable?

For a faster outdoor batch, Rutgers recommends a pile at least about three feet by three feet to retain heat. Its home composting guide also identifies inadequate moisture, poor aeration, and insufficient nitrogen as possible reasons for low temperature. Check those conditions before enlarging the pile. If it is already damp and airy but consists mostly of dry leaves, mixing in suitable fresh greens can help.

A thermometer reading is only part of the diagnosis. Record where you measured and whether you recently turned or added material, so later readings are useful comparisons. A cool reading alone does not tell you whether the batch is dry, small, slow, or finished.

Why are leaves, grass, or woody pieces still visible?

Ingredients do not all disappear together. Large, tough pieces expose less surface area than smaller pieces. Chop bulky plant material before adding it when practical, following Rutgers guidance on surface area. Avoid turning the whole mix into a dense paste in pursuit of smaller particles.

A leaf-heavy batch is a valid composting project, but it needs different expectations from a balanced food-scrap batch. Rutgers notes that leaves can compost without added nitrogen fertilizer when given more time. Fresh grass can accelerate leaf decomposition, but too much creates oxygen-poor conditions. Mix clippings into the leaves instead of depositing a thick, compact layer. For New Jersey households, autumn leaves are a useful supply to keep beside an active food-scrap bin. Set some aside rather than adding the entire seasonal supply at once. That makes the next adjustment easier when a fresh batch of wet scraps arrives.

How do I keep animals and flies away from compost?

Start with exposed food and access to the bin. Cornell recommends keeping meat and other animal products out of a backyard pile, covering food with browns, and using quarter-inch hardware cloth as a barrier. Its troubleshooting chart connects animal problems to unsuitable ingredients and poorly covered scraps.

Check the base and edges of the enclosure, not only the lid. After adding suitable scraps, restore their covering instead of leaving food visible on top. If flies gather around fresh additions, review that same feeding routine before assuming the whole pile needs replacing. A pickup bucket is a storage container, not an active compost pile. Follow your collector’s accepted-material rules and our scrap storage guide rather than adding yard materials to the bucket as a troubleshooting measure.

How do I know when compost is ready?

Stop feeding a batch when you want it to finish; start fresh additions elsewhere. EPA recommends allowing at least four weeks of curing after the pile no longer heats following mixing and food scraps are no longer visible. A pile that cooled because it dried out has not passed that check merely by being cool.

A few woody fragments do not necessarily mean the entire batch has failed. Rutgers recommends screening out larger, partly decomposed pieces and returning them to an active pile. Its leaf compost guidance also explains why burying fresh leaves in planted soil differs from adding finished compost: microbes decomposing those leaves can temporarily compete with plants for nitrogen.

Common compost troubleshooting questions

Should I start over with a smelly pile?

Usually, correct its moisture and airflow first. Remove unsuitable additions and work browns through wet material. Starting a second pile with the same ingredients and habits would repeat the problem. Use the odor and moisture checks above to decide what to change.

Does a frozen pile mean composting has failed?

No. Cold weather slows the process. Rutgers suggests insulation to help retain heat, but a small outdoor pile may still slow substantially. How can I avoid the same problems next time?

Keep browns within reach and check inside the bin when adding material.
